Biblical Response Therapy Counseling Thoughts

It's amazing to me how valid scientific research is authenticating the truths of God's word concerning mental and spiritual health!
Proverbs 23:7 gives us this fascinating fact about how our thoughts affect our lives:
"For as he thinks in his heart, so is he. 'Eat and drink!' he says to you, but his heart is not with you." Not only does this verse tell us where our emotions originate and how we become who we are as a person
(through our thinking), but it also reveals the fact that words do not always reveal what's going on in a person's heart
(that person's thoughts)! Someone's motivation for saying and doing nice things can be very self-centered even though, to all outward appearances, their activities seem honorable. Before I surrendered to God and accepted Jesus Christ into my heart, I could be "the nicest guy in town" to get what I wanted from people, only to misuse and abuse what they gave me (you might be able to relate). Dr. David M. Burns from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, in his book, "Feeling Good," gives us a bit of scientific input: "Your feelings are created by your thoughts and not the actual events. All experiences must be processed through your brain and given a conscious meaning before you experience any emotional response." I think that's why the Lord tells us in
Proverbs 4:23,
"Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life." How important it is for us to practice thinking pure thoughts! Consider
Philippians 4:8. Courage to you! Pastor Dan
Thank you Pastor Dan. I am thankful too that science is proving God's word correct. That gives me hope. I have a question: How can a person know they are thinking the right thing about a situation that is confronting them?

Top o' the day to you Buff! The only way we can know we're thinking accurately and healthfully is to compare our thoughts with the great standard of right and wrong, God's word. "To the law and to the testimony, if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them." Isaiah 8:20. See also John 17:17; 2 Timothy 3:15-17. Courage to you my friend! The Lord has nothing but your best interests in mind! Jeremiah 29:11. Pastor Dan.
