My mother has osteoporosis and has been taking bisphosphonates (Actonel) for about five years. Her doctor has said she'll need to be on this medication for life. I've read about many things that can be done to prevent osteoporosis, such as weight bearing exercise and reducing protein in the diet, but are there natural treatments that are effective once a person has osteoporosis?

Using a lo fat, lo sodium, whole foods vegan diet with weight bearing exercises are effective ways to increase bone density.

Have your mother's doctor check her vitamin D level. If it is below 60, she would benefit from taking a vitamin D supplement and spending more time in the sunshine in addition to doing the things Elizabeth suggested. Doing the above is the best way to reverse and prevent osteoporosis.

Thanks for the helpful suggestions. I'll pass them along to her.
