I recently read an article written by doctors which stated: "It is very possible that, in optimal conditions, a vegan diet (total plant-based diet) is best; in less-than-optimal conditions we believe a lacto-ovo vegetarian diet is the best one for us to recommend. It should be understood that only because of the fortification of dairy alternatives with vitamin B12, vitamin D, and calcium is a total plant-based diet adequate. Should such fortification not be available, we would be derelict in our duty to recommend such total plant-based diet."

If God's original diet was totally plant-based and we should adhere to God's diet for optimal health - is it possible to obtain adequate amounts of the above mentioned vitamins and minerals without fortification?
In case, what are the food sources?

I believe God's original diet was perfect. I know plants don't have the nutrients they did even 60 years ago because of depleted soils but I do believe the plant based diet is still the best. Calcium comes from dark leafy greens, legumes and moderate amounts in whole grains. Vitamin D comes from being in the sunshine. Vitamin B12 is added to nutritional yeast. Some people on a vegetarian or non vegetarian diet are deficient in the above mentioned areas. It is important to get a variety of foods.

Hi Metasgirl,

I can tell you that my health has improved noticeably since I switched to God's Gen. 1:29 diet nearly 12 years ago. As for getting adequate vitamin B12 and vitamin D, though there is some controversy about the B12 on the internet, I can tell you that statistically there is a higher percentage of meat-eaters with Vitamin B12 deficiency than there are vegans. It has something to do with lacking certain bacteria in the gut. There are sources for Vitamin B 12 in a vegetarian diet. Some argue that plant sources of B12 are not readily or as readily available to people. However, the animals eat that same B12 and do very well. I see no reason to have my B12 processed through an animal. God's original diet in the first chapter of Genesis is clearly plant-based. So it makes sense to me that He would also make people so they could assimilate plant-based vitamin B12.

I've wondered how God's original diet could be deficient in anything, but I think what Elizabeth said about depleted soils etc. also plays a part. We live in a very polluted world very far from those ideal days in Eden - so I suppose sometimes supplementation is necessary. I am reading a lot on the net about Vitamin D being so helpful for everything from osteoporosis to heart disease. I personally take D supplementation because I live in a northern climate where especially in the winter we probably don't get enough sun. And being fair skinned I have to be careful about exposure to too much sun.

BTW, I have this theory that the sunscreens they tell us to wear actually contribute to skin cancer. Anyone, have any information to substantiate such a crazy idea?

If you read the labels on the sunscreens you will find a huge list of chemicals. We know that chemicals and hormones are absorbed through the skin. If they weren't absorbed through the skin, then the narcotic pain patches and the hormone patch (i.e. estrogen, etc.) and the hormone creams they prescribe wouldn't have any effect...but they do! So you take a sunscreen full of chemicals and apply it to your skin and the toxic chemicals are absorbed (at least skin deep). It makes sense that they could cause cancer.I have actually read some reports by a few doctors indicating that they think sunscreens can cause cancer.

The other important thing to remember is that when you have sunscreen on, your skin doesn't produce any Vitamin D, since the sunscreen blocks the UVB rays which produce the Vitamin D in your skin. So, if you need to use sunscreen, it is recommended that you get however many minutes of sun first without the sunscreen that you can get without burning, then apply the sunscreen. That way you get some Vitamin D.

Studies posted by the Vitamin D Council show that sun induced Vitamin D production actually helps prevent skin cancer, as long as you don't let yourself get fried with a bad sunburn.
