In this weary world I know you are going to enjoy this topic on REST. A Doctor once said that our bodies are like a machine. We have stored energy, and we use that energy up it has to be replaced. Now an antidote for fatigue is rest.
There are three main types of fatigue:
1) Toxic fatigue-such as when you feel when you’re sick. That tired feeling you are experiencing is because of toxic fatigue from the cold. If you suffer from any type of illness, you have a “tiredness” You can also get toxic fatigue from alcohol, tobacco, and other poisonous substances.
2) Hypertonic fatigue which is when we use our brain (too much mental work) and emotional strain. Now the rest for that is actually EXERCISE. You don’t go to bed after you have hypertonic fatigue- you need to move physically so that part of the brain can rest. SO we need a balance between rest and physical activity.
3) Hypotonic fatigue comes from too much muscle activity and for that you need rest
So you have different types of rest. Rest can also come as a means of fulfillment. We need spiritual rest as well and I think most of us here would agree on that.
An increasing number of people who always feel tired are not really doing much physically. That’s why people who exercise consistently usually have more energy and endurance than those who don’t because they are regularly placing the demand on the body to supply needed energy. This is why it is difficult for those who are just starting to exercise to really enjoy physical work because their bodies are not used to making that demand.
Dr. Lee says in an interview in the book The WAY OF LIFE, “Our mind has to enter rest or be at rest first and then our body can be at rest. No matter how comfortable and cozy you might be in your bed at night if your mind is filled with anger, hatred, etc. your body is not actually resting, because our brain produces a lot of wrong chemicals. When you’re not really forgiving and have anger and hatred the brain has a special chemical adrenalin which is really affecting our metabolism. No matter who much you are taking of physical rest, you are not really getting true rest. That is why forgiveness (choosing to forgive) is essential to set the brain chemically right. Then we can come into true rest. Then we have a good chemical in our brain, and it will also strengthen the immune system. They are all related.
There is a spiritual rest that God wants for all of us. Matt 11:28 Jesus says, “Come unto Me all ye that labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest.” That’s the kind of Savior we have. Hebrews chapter 4 says
“There remained therefore a rest to the people of God. For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works as God did from His. We can’t work our way to heaven. God wants us to enter into His rest. Just as He ceased His labors on the seventh day Sabbath, showing Adam and Eve how to keep the Sabbath day holy and to find that spiritual refreshment, so should we. This spiritual renewal, this Sabbath rest is what we also need to have. The Sabbath is a foretaste of what wonderful time God has planned for us when we’ll have that eternal rest where there will be no more sin and no more suffering.
