Important herbs to have in your home: Prepare for No buy, No Sell!

1.       Aloe Vera Gel- Contains an impressive line-up of vitamins and minerals: Vitamins B1, B2, B3, B9 ( folic acid), B12, A, C and minerals like calcium, zinc, chromium, magnesium, potassium and more. Great for healing tissue inside or out. Purchase the giant leaf at the store or grow your own aloe vera plant at home. Scrape up to two dessert spoons of the gel out off the leaf. Blend the gel along with water and lemon juice together and consume in the morning for a refreshing detox. You may also add aloe vera to vegetable juice. Excellent for the gut, helps promote better digestion and increase hydrochloric acid production. It helps those who battle IBS, and Crohns disease. Aloe vera is good to repair damaged skin, treat wounds, burns, frostbite, redness, flakiness, psoriasis,  reduce inflammation, itching.

2.       Comfrey- It can increase wound healing and is good for painful joints like arthritis, aches, sprains, broken bones. It is anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, and anti-viral) Use the comfrey salve to apply to painful areas of the body. You may also use the leaf to make a comfrey poultice to apply to injuries. In the summer the leaves are best pulverized with a mortar and pestle. The larger the leaf, the less potency, the smaller the leaf the more concentrated the actives in the leaf. Add a small amount of boiling water to the leaves to bring out the mucilage then spread it onto a cloth, fold the edges over and apply to the area. Cover with plastic wrap and secure with a bandage or skin tape. In the winter dig the root, scrub it well to remove the dirt, and grate it very finely. The comfrey on the grated side will resemble a thick gooey mix. Spread this over the poultice cloth, dribble a teaspoon of boiling water over this to moisten it a little more, fold over the edges of cloth to make a package, and apply it to the affected area. Cover with plastic and secure with a bandage or skin tape. Comfrey leaves can be added to vegetable juices or finely chopped and sprinkled through salads.

3.       Castor Oil- penetrates to break up lumps, bumps, adhesions, fibroids, and cataracts to name a few. Good for inflammation, pain, skin conditions like rashes, and hair growth. Supports liver and digestive system, good for strained muscles, minor injuries, menstral pain, hives, fungus, tumors, skin dryness. Buy and use only if it is “hexane free” (hexane can cause nerve damage and other health issues). Drizzle the castor oil on a piece of cotton material and back it with plastic wrap. Apply this homemade compress to the affected area for at least 5 hours or overnight.  You can use saran wrap or body tape to secure it to yourself. You can also use undergarments like bras, shorts, or tank tops to keep the compress more secure.  Example: good for fibroids or cancer. Castor oil applications must be consistent to be effective. Remember to pray and ask the Lord to bless the treatment. You can use the compress over and over again, just reapply the oil each time.

4.       Cayenne pepper – it is an anti-inflammatory herb and a vasodilator ( meaning it opens up blood vessels, allowing the blood to flow more easily).  Pour on a wound to stop the bleeding (hemostatic). Consume via capsule form for pain management anywhere in the body. Cayenne pepper can increase circulation, and increases the healing of the stomach lining as well.  It has different strengths and can go up to 7 million HU. It Inhibits growth of cancer cells, prevents blood clots, and is good for cardiac issues, like a heart attack as it works like nitroglycerin.  *Stop using cayenne pepper as a natural medication at least 2 weeks before scheduled surgery because it is a blood thinner. *Note, when consuming cayenne do not cook the cayenne but add to the dish after it has been cooked as the cooked cayenne can irritate the stomach.

5.       Slippery Elm Bark powder- Is the powered bark of the slippery elm tree. It is slightly glutinous when mixed with water. This is one of the reasons that it soothes and heals as it lines the gut. Slippery Elm also contains a growth stimulant, which stimulates rapid healing in the lining of the gut.  Slippery Elm sooths the mouth, throat, stomach, the lining of the intestines and also causes the stools have more form. Stomach ulcers can be soothed and healed with slippery elm. Taken before each meal and before retiring at night is the usual dose until the gut is healed. 1 tsp is stirred quickly into a half of a cup of warm water to ensure there are no lumps. It is best drunk immediately as it thickens. More water can be added if it is too thick. Good for acid reflux, gird, heart burn, colic in babies, diarrhea, IBS, Crohns, gastritis, and duodenal ulcers. If giving slippery elm to a baby with colic a quarter of a tsp mixed with a little breast milk and given on a spoon can bring great relief. Slippery Elm is very safe and can be given to a newborn.

How can we use herbs?

·        Teas

·        Extracts (longer shelf life) up to 2 yrs. Use vegetable glycerin and not alcohol.

·        Capsules ( ground herbs in the capsules)

·        Essential oils (powerful concentration of the herb used) It takes around 26 cups of peppermint tea to make one drop of peppermint essential oil.

·        Poultices- keep plant material on body parts for a number of hours to help bring healing

·        Fomentations hot/cold- opens pores and increases blood flow, helps with muscles spasms etc.

*Bulk herbs lasts 6 months to 1 year. Store in a dark cool environment to preserve their flavor and freshness as light and head can degrade them. Use amber colored jars if possible or if jars are clear keep them out of the light.

Dandelion Root- Use for Liver support. Make a tea using the dandelion root. Boil water, place 1 tsp per 1 cup of water to simmer on low. After 15 minutes turn off, strain, and drink. Good for kidney issues and edema.

Red Clover-An excellent blood purifier. Can kill cancer and helps to build up the immune system. Can help in menopausal symptoms. Drink in the form of a tea. 1 tsp per 1 cup water. Boil water, add the tea, turn heat off and allow to steep for 15 minutes. Strain and enjoy. May use as a tincture.

Goldenseal-King of tonics for mucous membranes.  (Antibacterial)  Good for inflamed sinus, sniff a small amount into the nostril. A bitter herb that is also good for the gut to help promote better digestion. Take in capsule form. May also use as a tincture for a lung cleanse, immune and digestive support. Good for skin diseases, infections, pink eye, athletes foot, psoriasis, eczema, acne, dry skin, wounds, cellulitis and tumors.  Herbal fomentation: Make a tea using the goldenseal powder. Strain it, then take a piece of cotton material and dunk it in the tea. Don’t wring it out completely,  apply it to the area and cover with plastic. It must be kept wet to work.

White Willow Bark – good for any type of pain. Use as a tea or in capsule form. When making the tea take 1 tsp of the herb per 1 cup of water. Bring water to a boil, place the herbs in the water, allow to simmer for 15 minutes. Turn heat off, strain the tea and consume.

Stinging Nettle leaf- This plant is able to pull more minerals out of the soil than any other plant. Known to build red blood cells because of its high chlorophyll content. Chlorophyll is almost identical in molecular structure to human blood. It is anti-inflammatory, & highly nutritious.  A tea can be made by pouring boiling water onto the leaves. Allow to sit and strain for 10 minutes. The leaves can also be cooked like spinach. * Hint, use gloves to collect and chop. It can be added to other vegetables when making a juice.

Peppermint Leaf Good for gas, bloating, upset stomach, effective decongestant, soothing and calming for sore throats, laryngitis, and dry cough.  Open the nasal passages. Put 1-2 drops of peppermint essential oil in the water for a steam inhalation. May use peppermint as a tea.

St. Johns Wart-Good for anxiety and stress. Take by making a tea with it, use in capsule form or use as a tincture.

Valerian Root-Good for sleep, and to calm the nerves. Take in tea or capsule form 30 minutes before bed time. Use 1 tsp of the herb per 1 cup water. Bring the water to a boil and add your herbs. Turn the heat to simmer for 10 minutes then turn off the heat. Strain and consume.

Elderberry-Good to combat viruses- Can make a tea or syrup or tincture to help build up the immune the system. Use 1 tsp of herb per 1 cup water. Bring the water to a boil and allow the berries to steep for 10-15 minutes. Strain and consume

Wild Yam Cream-good for hormonal imbalance whether male or female. The Wild Yam Cream, when applied consistently over a period of time, is able to stimulate the body to make more progesterone, which reduces estrogen levels. How long the hormones have been unbalanced for will influence how long the cream is applied. Most would do well to continue the cream for at least one year.
